I'm similarly stunned and confused about the apparently real dichotomy of mind and consciousness, and I think Chalmers's argument for the extended mind strongly suggests consciousness and the mind are entirely separate.

The materialist view is that the consciousness is merely an emergent effect of the mind, but if one rejects emergentism (as I do), consciousness therefore must originate somewhere else. The question of course is...where?
